Computer systems were designed to store and retrieve data from their inception, and in the early days of computing, all underlying systems consisting of servers, storage, and software were designed, assembled, and supported by single vendors. Following on this design philosophy, early databases of varying types were optimized for specific hardware provided by those same vendors. The 1970s saw the introduction of a new type of database, the relational database. Some of these early database vendors continued to develop and support specific hardware platforms.
