The FCTP aims to: ensure that the activities that are relevant and important to the client are evaluated and addressed; allow the client and significant others to drive the decision-making process about therapy; be flexible for use with all aphasic clients whatever the severity of their aphasia; take into account pre-morbid personality, activities and abilities; observe the client's performance in considerable detail; be non-standardized to encourage clinicians to use professional judgement in their evaluation and planning and to encourage them to modify the content to suit specific populations and settings.

For example, if a goal is to catch a bus independently, the activities involved include reading the bus timetable, telling the time, recognizing the correct bus, handling money for the fare and knowing where to get off, and being able to do all this in reverse order to get home. The evaluation will highlight the skills that require intervention to achieve the client's goals as well as providing a baseline from which to measure the effectiveness of therapy. In research projects this evaluation stage has been used differently.

People who developed their aphasia years before may still benefit from a fresh examination of the communicative difficulties they may still be encountering.
