The Page 15 old forts of Maubeuge, which defended a major invasion route that passed through Liege and Namur in Belgium, were modernized. The Maginot Extension, about 20 kilometers long, was linked to the main line by a small, 30 km-long area defended by smaller works. Part of a newer building program, it was designed to expand the line of defenses towards Sedan to block a possible German invasion through southern Belgium, via Luxembourg. It was separated from the Maginot Line Proper by a small defensive sector that relied mainly on the rough terrain for its defense.

The abris, or infantry shelters, acted as command posts and service positions for the regiments occupying the sectors. In many cases the petits ouvrages were placed between gros ouvrages to cover gaps. In a number of places there were no artillery forts because they were not completed as originally planned and were transformed into petits ouvrages instead. This happened especially in the SFs on either side of the Sarre Gap and the SF of Haguenau on the right flank of the RF of La Lauter. The Sarre Gap was defended by positions that were mostly not designed as part of the permanent fortifications.

A permanent concrete bridge spanned the narrow fossé and a heavy iron grating barred access to the entrance tunnel. The grating was covered by a firing position for an FM at the end of the tunnel, adjacent to a heavy armored door. In front of the armored door and weapons position was a sliding bridge over a deep pit, known as a tank trap. This arrangement was standard for EMs designed for train cars of a narrow-gauge military railroad and for trucks. Those entrances that were not designed for railroad use had a slightly different design.
