Sawai Shinichiro) The 47 Loyal Samurai (Chushingura) (dir. Mizoguchi Kenji) 2 The house and family system INTRODUCTION In Japan, as elsewhere, life begins in a family and it is here that one first builds up a picture of the world. Family members are usually the first people we learn to classify, and in many of the small-scale societies with which anthropologists are familiar, everyone in the society is classified as a relative of one sort or another, so that an understanding of kin relations is essential to understanding any social interaction at all.

From 1970 to 1990 single-person households increased by 50 per cent and they now represent nearly one-quarter of all households (Japan Statistical Yearbook 1992:47). Some of these households are single young people as they have always been, and some are people whose marriages have broken up, but others are an increasing number of people who are choosing not to marry at all. There are also quite a few widows and widowers whose children have left home and who may or may not be near enough to help out.

Marriages in the country were based on mutual attraction in pre-Meiji times, rather than the distant unions which were developed by the Samurai class, and although these arranged marriages spread for a while throughout all social classes, love marriages have now become reasonably acceptable. However, in continuing houses, a wife still needs to suit the other members of the family as well. In nuclear families, especially those of men who work for big companies, it has become common for a woman to stay at home, keep house and attend to the small children, and she is usually entrusted with the family finances as well.
